Study Tips and Time Management

Although this site is designed to aid the college student, it is applicable to high school students as well, especially those taking college-level courses, such as AP®.

  • Students enrolled in an A or B AP® course should plan on spending a minimum of 10 hours per week on course material.  This assumes that the student is enrolled in the longest schedule possible (18 weeks).  If you are enrolled in a shorter schedule, plan to spend more than 10 hours per week.
  • Students enrolled in an AB AP® course should plan on spending a minimum of 15 hours per week on course material.  This assumes that the student is enrolled in the longest schedule possible (18 weeks).  If you are enrolled in a shorter schedule, plan to spend more than 15 hours per week.

Reading Materials

A recommended website to preview is http://www.musictheory.net/.  Work through the lessons and trainers to give a solid base from which to start the course.

The text used is Tonal Harmony with an Introduction to Twentieth-Century Music by Kostka, Stefan and Payne, Dorothy. (2004); New York: McGraw-Hill.

Students do not have to purchase a book; a textbook and workbook will be mailed to you before the beginning of the semester pending full enrollment.  Registration date is also a factor in determining when your materials will be shipped.

Georgia Virtual School will provide students with one copy of Finale Notepad to install on a home or school computer.  If you wish to purchase a second copy for use on a second computer, please visit http://www.finalemusic.com/NotePad/ to purchase a download.

The AP® Exam

Ultimately, the student is responsible for following through on the registration process for the AP® exam which is given in May.  Please let your school know that you want to take the exam for this course early in the Spring Semester.  Visit this link for a year-long calendar of dates and specific exam dates:  http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/cal.html
