Home Schools

Georgia Virtual School, an initiative of the Department of Education, provides opportunities and options for Georgia students to engage in Advanced Placement, college preparatory, career and technical, and other electives online to enhance their learning experiences.

During fall and spring semesters, registered home school students can take up to one unit of GAVS high school-level courses using state funding. (One unit in the fall and one unit in the spring.) State funded seats are limited, and enrollment is granted on a first come, first served basis. Home school students can enroll in additional classes at a cost of $300 per half unit. There is no state funding available for summer courses. The cost is $300 per half unit.

How to Register as a Home School Student with GAVS

Step 1 - Click on the Registration link located at the top of the screen and create an account for which you will be assigned a username and GTID (Georgia Testing ID). Please note: It will take up to 72 hours to receive your GTID. You will be notified via email when your GTID has been assigned.

Step 2 - After receiving notification that your GTID has been assigned, log in to the GAVS website and apply for the course(s) you wish to take using state funding, if available. You will not be able to change the courses receiving state funding, so be sure you select your first choice at this point.

Step 3 - Your application(s) will be reviewed and approved. If additional information or documentation is needed, the GAVS home school facilitator will contact you via email.

Step 4 - Return to registration and apply for the courses you wish to take by paying $300 tuition per half unit. You will receive an email prompting you to return to registration to pay your tuition online after your courses have been approved.

If you have any questions, please send an email to homeschool@gavirtualschool.org.

 Special Education Students

Georgia Virtual School does provide accommodations in the on-line environment for students with an IEP or 504 Plan. In order to have accommodations implemented in an on-line class, GAVS must receive a current copy of the student's IEP or 504 Plan each semester the student enrolls in a GAVS class.

Special Education documentation may be faxed by the student's school to (770) 357-3704. GAVS staff will then review the IEP or 504 Plan to determine what accommodations are appropriate for the on-line class.

If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Newman at Sarah.Newman@doe.k12.ga.us
